Full job description

At Torngat Metals, we are developing the Strange Lake project to meet the urgent global demand for responsibly sourced rare earths that are essential to the energy transition. We are currently seeking talented individuals who are eager to contribute to our highly strategic project and play a role in shaping a resilient and responsible rare earth industry in Canada.

Torngat Metals is seeking a qualified Controller to join its team located in Montreal. Reporting to the VP Finance, this role is responsible for the overall management of the company’s financial functions and reporting. The role will evolve with the project’s advancement into operations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and oversee all accounting and financial reporting activities of the company, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Act as a key financial partner to the VP Finance, supporting strategic decision-making as the project advances toward development and operations.
  • Coordinate the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual internal and external financial statements.
  • Oversee all regulatory and statutory reporting requirements, including tax filings, government reporting, and compliance obligations.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain accounting policies, technical accounting memos, and documentation in accordance with IFRS.
  • Manage cash disbursements, treasury activities, and short-term cash forecasting.
  • Maintain and optimize the current accounting system (SAGE 50), while playing a leading role in the evaluation and future implementation of a cloud-based accounting system and eventual ERP integration.
  • Strengthen existing financial processes and design scalable financial and reporting frameworks to support future operational growth.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, periodic reforecasts, and variance analysis, providing clear insights and recommendations to management.
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve internal controls, ensuring a strong control environment as the organization grows.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor accounting staff (accounts payable administrator / financial analyst), with involvement in the recruitment of future finance team members.
  • Support audit processes and act as the primary point of contact with external auditors and advisors.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Experience within a mining, industrial, manufacturing, or process-driven environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a public company environment and solid working knowledge of IFRS, particularly as applied to complex or project-based organizations.
  • Strong technical accounting background with the ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting standards.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting systems (SAGE 50 or similar); exposure to system implementations or process transformation considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Comfortable operating in a lean organization and building structure and processes where needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across functions.
  • Bilingual (French and English), both written and spoken.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Competitive compensation with a bonus program.
  • Group RRSP with up to 5% employer contribution.
  • Flexible hours and hybrid work schedule.
  • Generous benefits (health, dental and vision).
  • Telemedicine.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Professional development and career advancement opportunities.
  • Free coffee!
