Position Overview

Senior Automation/Design Engineer will be responsible for carrying out automation and mechanical design projects within the New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering department, including concept, design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, and cost estimating via LEAN principles.

Responsibilities

  • Automation/Design engineers report to the NPI engineering manager and collaborate with R&D design, process engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing teams on automation and design projects.
  • Generally supports the manufacturing areas of electro-optical subsea amplifiers, Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), and fiber optic data transmission terminal equipment
  • Automation responsibilities include working with process engineering and manufacturing groups to generate consensus for automation solutions. Evaluate automation upgrade ideas and coordinate planning meetings, design reviews, trials, and other events with relevant groups.
  • Mechanical design responsibilities include architecting, developing, and implementing mechanical design solutions. Requires technical problem solving, innovation through creative technical solutions, and clear communication of findings to team members.
  • Ability to create designs in both PTC Creo and SOLIDWORKS environments.
  • Organize and maintain new and existing engineering drawings.
  • Construct prototypes and confirm/defend designs through rigorous technical review.
  • Perform physical testing on design prototypes.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable industry and business standards.
  • Ability to drive complex problems to root cause; and, implement effective solutions which make both engineering and business sense are essential with this position.

Qualifications

  • This position requires excellent interpersonal communication skills for interfacing with internal and external organizations as required to perform job responsibilities.
  • Minimum 5 years of automation/design experience in a manufacturing environment, with demonstrated ability to produce per project schedule and budgets.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required. MS preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of PTC Creo and SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD design environments
  • Strong experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (G,D&T)
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical design principles
  • Experience with 3D printing/additive manufacturing technologies
  • Knowledge of plastic and metal fabrication processes
  • Ability to coordinate and interface with manufacturing suppliers, machine shops, etc
  • Understanding of machine shop tool technology
  • Knowledge of one, but preferably more, of the following: power transmission equipment, pneumatics, hydraulics, PLC controls, robotics, sensors, vision systems, and automation systems.
