Position Overview

The Firmware Development Intern will work closely with experienced staff engineers developing embedded firmware applications for SubCom’s product line. The intern will develop valuable technical, teamwork, and time management skills during their SubCom internship.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • The Firmware Development Intern will assist in embedded software development, debugging, and testing for subsea communication systems. This includes supporting firmware design, writing, and testing low-level code for microcontrollers in a laboratory environment using C/C++.
  • The intern will gain hands-on experience in real-time embedded systems, low-level driver development, and hardware/software integration.
  • Support testing and debugging of firmware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debugging tools.
  • Develop and optimize firmware algorithms for efficient operation on embedded platforms.
  • Develop interactive test tools using National Instruments Labwindows/CVI.
  • Documentation of completed firmware implementation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in C programming for embedded systems.
  • Understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontrollers, and hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, etc.).
  • Familiarity with version control systems and firmware development workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of embedded debugging tools and methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of completion toward a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn in a hands-on development environment.
